It’s been a whole month since I joined East London Cares as the new Social Clubs Coordinator – and what a month it’s been! Before joining the team, I had previously volunteered and delivered dance social clubs for both North & East London Cares. I had such a welcoming and fun experience with the neighbours and the staff then, that I knew I wanted to continue to be part of The Cares Family!
In this role, I’ll be coordinating and delivering a variety of social activities, across Hackney and Tower Hamlets, for older and younger neighbours to enjoy together every month. Social clubs happen online, over the phone and in face-to-face locations, we also create monthly activity packs for people to complete at home – creating such an exciting and accessible social clubs programme every month makes me really proud to be part of the team. Through social clubs (and our other core programmes) we aim to tackle loneliness and isolation across different ages, strengthen local community relationships and build connections in this ever-changing city. I’m aiming to make our social clubs programme as inclusive and accessible as possible, so if you have any ideas or suggestions of places you’d like to visit or clubs you’d like to see at East London Cares, please do get in touch!
Check out this new volunteering opportunity for multi/bilingual speakers that can help make our programmes even more inclusive of the many communities and languages in east London.
August social clubs are in full-swing and we have had some great moments already. We started off the month with a reflective and forward-looking Start your month right club (a fitting name) and Wellbeing hour lead by lifestyle coach Tim. We had a virtual dance at our Saturday shimmy club, and will be getting together at Clissold Park to learn Makaton during a Skill share club. That’s just a few of the clubs coming up this month, and our September programme is on its way. Keep an eye out for the Saturday shimmy social clubs that I’ll be running each month – I love to dance and have been teaching for many years, so I had to bring that along with me to East London Cares!
I’m really excited to put together a programme full of fun and interesting activities for east London neighbours to enjoy, but most importantly, I can’t wait to meet you all at a social club soon.
