It’s been two months since I started my new role at East London Cares, and I can’t believe how quickly that time has flown by! I’ve so enjoyed getting to know the team, older and younger neighbours and being introduced to our community partners. Before joining the team, I had been to virtual social clubs as a volunteer, so I’ve loved meeting older and younger neighbours at in person social clubs that I’d only spoken to online before now.
As the Volunteer and outreach coordinator, my role is to meet new older and younger neighbours, and community partners, and introduce them to our network and wider community. I share information about our Social Clubs and Love Your Neighbour, as well as details of other activities going on in Hackney and Tower Hamlets. I also make referrals so that neighbours can receive some of the amazing support our community partners provide. Strengthening local community relationships and building connections is so important when tackling isolation and loneliness, so I’m always keen to meet new local businesses, groups and organisations, and catch up with our existing community partners to ensure that we work together to support as many people as best we can.
I’m so pleased that we can return to face-to-face activities and events and be more of a physical presence in the community. Last month I attended a Talkaoke event at Pembury Community Centre, hosted by The People Speak, where we got to chat to lots of local neighbours and other community groups, and this month we got to hang out with some very glammed up neighbours at The Posh Club! The team and I have also been back exploring Hackney and Tower Hamlets for places to meet neighbours and host our programmes. From this I have got to know the area so much better in my short time here so far.
Meeting volunteers at inductions has been a highlight as well. We welcome new volunteers all the time and are currently on the lookout for people in the Stoke Newington and Clapton areas – if you know anyone who might be interested, please share our details with them. Or if you would like to get involved and meet your east London neighbours, sign up here or give me a call on 0207 118 4949 (option 3).
I am looking forward to meeting even more our community over the coming months, and if you’d like to find out more about our outreach programme, or how you could work with East London Cares, please do get in touch: [email protected].
