Earlier this month we welcomed 32 younger neighbours to our first ever volunteer induction. Despite the cold and dreary weather, the room was packed with people excited to get involved.
The evening saw people from all sorts of backgrounds and industries; artists, accountants, journalists, musicians, lawyers, teachers, and many more. But what they all had in common was coming together to find out how they can get to know and spend meaningful time with their older neighbours in Tower Hamlets and Hackney – over a few slices of pizza, of course!
Through the induction we told them how to do just that, whether it be coming to our Social Clubs, or hanging out with an older neighbours regularly through the Love Your Neighbour programme. Talking about the Winter Wellbeing project also acted a reminder of how important keeping warm, active and connected is to our older neighbours, and what a difference being part of these programmes can make to their lives.
With our Social Clubs now in full swing, it has been wonderful seeing people from the induction join us at our clubs.
We want to make our next volunteer induction even bigger so we can connect more fantastic younger people to their older East End older neighbours – and you can help by spreading the word or coming to the next one yourself! We will be holding these inductions every month, and would love to meet as many of you there as we can.
Our next volunteer inductions are taking place on the 6th November and 4th December, 7-8.30pm. You can sign up to volunteer – we’ll then send you an email inviting you to book into the induction that best suits your schedule.
A huge thank you to everybody that came and for being the first of many younger east Londoners who will share time, laughter and friendship with older locals, and to Second Home for hosting us. We can’t wait for the next one!
