Coffee And Chat July21

Would you like to use your language skills to help tackle loneliness and isolation in east London?

We are working in partnership with The Reader to run a pilot series of online social clubs, based on shared multilingual reading, and we are looking for volunteers to assist in the running of these sessions. If you speak English as well as Bengali, Somali, Turkish or Polish, and would like to help us create a welcoming space for older and younger neighbours to build friendships and share literature, poems and more, we’d love to hear from you.

As our Volunteer Facilitator, you will:

  • Be able to volunteer approximately 3 hours a month for a minimum of 6 months. This time will be split between the social club (1-1.5 hours at a set time in the month) and around 2 hours preparation time (this time can be flexible, and will be agreed with our Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator);
  • Be able to speak and translate English and either Bengali, Somali, Turkish or Polish;
  • Support the team in liaising with older and younger neighbours in Tower Hamlets and Hackney;
  • Receive training and support in co-designing and co-delivering a virtual Social Club from our Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator;
  • Receive training from The Reader to become a 'Reader Leader';
  • Gain experience in community outreach, event organising, and improving people’s sense of connection;
  • Receive ongoing support from our Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator and bi-monthly 121 check-ins with our Head of Programmes.

If this sounds like something you’d like to do, please take a look at the full volunteer role description for details on how to apply. Please note that this is a voluntary role. All volunteers are asked to attend an online induction, which lasts approximately two hours, before taking part in our programmes.

The Cares Family is an anti-racist organisation committed to advancing anti-racism. We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people, who are under-represented in our organisation. We are an equal opportunities organisation.
